Presley Family Biscuits

3 cups self-rising flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 375. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and sugar. With a pastry blender or two knives, work shortening into flour until it is the consistency of coarse meal. Stir in buttermilk just until dough forms.
Knead dough thoroughly, adding more flour, if necessary, to make dough easy to handle. Sprinkle flour on a cutting board and roll or pat dough out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out biscuits with 2-inch round cutter and place in shallow baking pan or cookie sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden. Serve warm.
