Low-Fat Almond Brownies

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
A pinch of salt
1/4 cup butter spread
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 egg whites, lightly beaten
1/4 cup slivered almonds (optional)

Preheat oven to 350. Grease an 8"x8" baking pan; set aside.
In medium bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt; set aside.
With electric mixer, beat butter spread and sugars for 3 minutes, or until creamy. Beat in vanilla and egg whites. Slowly beat in flour mixture just until blended. Stir in almonds.
Pour mixture evenly into prepared pan.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out almost clean. Cool completely on wire rack. To serve, cut brownies into squares. Makes 16 brownies.
