Grandma's Plain Sugar Cookies

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tsps. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour

Cream sugar, shortening and eggs until light and fluffy. Add buttermilk with dry ingredients. Add vanilla or any other flavorings. Stir until just mixed. Chill for a few hours. Roll out about 1/2-inch thick and cut out. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in a 375 oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Bake until lightly brown; will dry out if overbaked.
