Aunt Beulah's Coleslaw with Cooked Dressing

1 large cabbage, shredded (12 cups)
1 small onion, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
Cooked Dressing
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon white vinegar

Place cabbage and onion in a large bowl; sprinkle with salt, and cover with ice cubes. Let stand 1 hour; drain.
Stir Cooked Dressing and next 4 ingredients; toss with cabbage mixture. Chill 1 hour.

Cooked Dressing

3 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 large egg
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon butter or margarine

Cook first 6 ingredients in a heavy saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, 5 minutes or until thickened; stir in butter, and cool.
